Arctic Chill to Bring First Snowfall Across UK

Published on

More than 20 regions in the UK are expected to see the first snowfall of winter next week as an Arctic chill is poised to hit the country.

An interactive map is now available to check the forecast for snow in your area. The Met Office anticipates a significant weather change following the heavy rain earlier in the week, with a likelihood of snow as cold Arctic air moves across the UK.

Meteorologists suggest that a zone of high pressure will dominate the weekend weather, shifting towards the Azores and ushering in cold northerly winds.

As this cold front advances southward over Britain, the Met Office warns of plummeting temperatures and the possibility of wintry conditions, including snow in various parts of the country. Temperature dips as low as -4C are expected in certain areas of Scotland on Monday morning.

The Met Office forecasts that this cold snap will expand nationwide, with temperatures dropping ‘several degrees’ below average. Nighttime temperatures could reach -2C in the North West of England on Tuesday, with widespread overnight lows ranging between 0C and 2C across central England and Scotland on Wednesday.

Alongside the cold conditions, the Met Office highlights an increasing chance of sleet and snow, particularly over elevated terrains in Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England, and possibly North Wales. Towards the end of next week, a widespread wintry period is expected to affect the UK, with even southern regions likely to experience snowfall.

According to OpenWeather, snow is expected to arrive in parts of Scotland and the North East on Monday, potentially reaching Wales on Tuesday and even extending to Gloucestershire in the South West. There is also a possibility of snow in Northern Ireland by Wednesday.

In a statement, the Met Office mentioned: “The likelihood of snow increases as we progress through the period. The wet weather on Friday in the south could lead to wintry conditions in the hills of northwest Wales.

“By Sunday and Monday, with colder air settling in, there is a reasonable chance of sleet and snow in northern Scotland, with the risk extending further south into Northern Ireland, northern England, and North Wales by Tuesday.

“The middle and end of next week might witness a more widespread wintry period if a weather system moves south, with some models suggesting a 20% or greater chance of over 1cm of snow even in southern regions. In addition to snow, there is also a risk of icy conditions, especially where rain meets cold surfaces.”

In the extended forecast for November 19 to 28, the Met Office states: “Colder conditions, already affecting the northernmost parts of the UK, are expected to progress southward to impact all areas in the early part of the period. Initially, some regions may experience less cold conditions with cloud cover,
