A recent warning has been issued to Android users regarding the BadBox malware, which has infected millions of devices. This malicious software can generate revenue for cybercriminals through adware and can also expose users to ransomware threats, demanding money to prevent data leaks.
Reports suggest that approximately 10 million devices, including tablets, projectors, and streaming boxes running Android, have been impacted by BadBox 2.0. These devices, often manufactured in China, are commonly pre-loaded with the malware.
To combat these attacks and ensure consumer safety, Google has taken legal action against the creators and distributors of these compromised devices. Google stated that the BadBox 2.0 botnet, primarily affecting internet-connected TV devices, is rapidly expanding and poses risks of severe cybercrimes like ransomware and DDoS attacks.
In addition to Google’s alert, the FBI has advised consumers to be vigilant and disconnect any potentially infected IoT devices from their networks. Some of the identified devices known to have been purchased with the malware include Android TV boxes with model numbers X88 Pro 10, T95, MXQ Pro, and QPLOVE Q9.
Consumers are urged to verify if their devices are Google Play Protect-certified, particularly if purchased from unofficial sources, to avoid falling victim to BadBox 2.0. It is recommended to steer clear of off-brand devices from unknown manufacturers to minimize the risk of malware infiltration. Users should exercise caution when downloading apps and only use software from official sources to prevent malware installation.
