“Exploring Quebec Identity: Diverse Perspectives Revealed”

Published on

In the political discussions of Quebec, the concept of Quebec identity, or l’identité Québécoise in French, is a recurring theme. The question of its meaning and the authority to define it has been a topic of interest as the Oct. 5 provincial election approaches. To gain insights, a diverse group of Quebec residents was interviewed, providing a range of perspectives on the matter.

The conversations included individuals like two South Asian women who immigrated to Quebec in the 1970s under René Lévesque’s governance. Additionally, discussions with young sovereignists of Indigenous and Maghrebi descent shed light on their views. Notably, a Montreal resident, distinct from identifying as a Quebecer, and two others grappling with balancing Quebec pride and defending English-language institutions, shared their experiences.

Dolores Chew and Shaheen Ashraf, who have lived in Quebec for over 50 years, reminisced about their early days in Quebec under René Lévesque while enjoying traditional South Asian comforts. Meanwhile, Nabil Ben Ali Ouriaghli and Benjamin Gingras, members of Oui Quebec advocating for sovereignty, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in their vision of an independent Quebec.

Shereen Joseph’s journey as a Malaysian Montrealer highlighted her strong connection to Montreal, where she found a sense of belonging that surpassed her experiences in Western Canada. The importance of English-language institutions in Quebec was discussed by Susan Perera and Allison Saunders, English school board commissioners, who emphasized the role of schools in fostering bilingualism and community.

These conversations reflect the diverse perspectives on Quebec identity and belonging, showcasing the complexity and richness of experiences within the province.
