Liberal Member of Parliament Shaun Chen announced his intention to resign by the week’s end, citing ongoing health challenges stemming from a car accident in late 2020. Chen, who has represented Scarborough North since 2015, revealed that the injuries sustained in the accident have resulted in significant health issues, limiting his ability to travel to Ottawa as required for his position. After consulting with his family, Chen made the decision to step down from his role as a Member of Parliament.
Prior to his political career, Chen served as the chair of the Toronto District School Board. Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed gratitude for Chen’s advocacy for youth and efforts to combat racism, wishing him a speedy recovery and success in his future endeavors. Chen’s resignation adds to a trend of MPs leaving their positions this summer.
Among the departing MPs are former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault and Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall, who are both set to vacate their seats at the end of the month. Conservative MP Larry Brock will step down in mid-September to pursue a position at the Brantford Crown attorney’s office. Additionally, NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice plans to resign from his Montreal seat before summer’s end to enter provincial politics with Québec Solidaire in October. Chen is scheduled to formally resign on Saturday.
