Paul Lim has once again etched his name in the annals of dart history by defeating Jeffrey de Graaf at the Alexandra Palace. The 71-year-old has solidified his status as the oldest player to clinch a victory at the PDC World Championship.

In a remarkable upset, Lim triumphed over the 35-year-younger De Graaf with a 3-1 scoreline to secure a berth in the second round. This victory comes four decades after his inaugural appearance at the World Championship.

Having qualified for the Alexandra Palace for the first time since the 2022 World Championship, where he fell in the initial round to Joe Murnam, Lim’s performance was modest, averaging 86.52 with two 180s, yet sufficient to outclass a below-par De Graaf.

Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Lim acknowledged the supportive crowd post-win, stating, “Just making it here is an accomplishment.” Reflecting on seizing opportunities, he noted, “No matter your skill level, there are moments when you can falter, and you must capitalize. I capitalized and am pleased.”

Lim’s most recent notable victory on the grand stage was against the current World No.2, Luke Humphries, in the prior year’s edition. If Humphries secures a win against Ted Evetts later, a potential rematch awaits in the second round.

Praising Humphries for his dedication and sportsmanship, Lim expressed optimism about a rematch, emphasizing Humphries’ skill but also hinting at the possibility of an upset.

Renowned as the “Singapore Slinger,” Lim’s enduring presence in darts has cemented his iconic status. He holds the distinction of being the first player to achieve a nine-darter in a World Championship, accomplishing the feat in the 1990 BDO tournament against Jack McKenna and earning a £52,000 bonus.
