With the arrival of the Christmas season, families all over the UK are coming together. However, for many young individuals who have grown up in the care system, this time of year can be particularly challenging.
Upon reaching the age of 18, children who have faced difficult circumstances are often left to navigate life on their own. This period can serve as a poignant reminder of the experiences they have missed out on and the obstacles that still lie ahead.
It is unfortunate that individuals leaving care are frequently let down by a system that appears to work against them. Consequently, these care leavers are at higher risk of experiencing homelessness, unemployment, and various mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
Efforts are being made to provide support and address the significant social inequalities that care leavers encounter. To shed light on this often overlooked group, Josh MacAlister, a former educator and social care expert, has been appointed as the inaugural Children’s Social Care Advisor within the department. The department is now implementing MacAlister’s expert recommendations to benefit care leavers.
One of the initial steps involves ensuring that care leavers are registered with a general practitioner (GP) and a dentist, as this basic but crucial support is often lacking, jeopardizing their health. Additionally, a comprehensive support package is being introduced to uplift the lives of care leavers across England.
Starting from the end of the following year, every young person leaving care will be entitled to free prescriptions, dental care, and eye examinations until they reach the age of 25. Furthermore, a mental health initiative is being launched to provide assistance to vulnerable children in care and their families when needed. In a bid to eliminate barriers to employment and promote successful careers for care leavers, guaranteed job interviews and paid internships in the NHS are being offered.
Recognizing the necessity for early intervention, new safeguarding measures are being introduced to ensure that GPs are promptly notified when their young patients are in care. This will enable healthcare providers to comprehend the challenges faced by these individuals and collaborate with social workers and educators to ensure the well-being and safety of these children.
These initiatives go beyond mere policy changes; they signify the acknowledgment that children in care deserve equal opportunities and sometimes require additional support to achieve them. The government is committed to breaking down barriers to opportunity and fostering a promising start in life for every child. This commitment is underscored by the allocation of £500 million to family support services and the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill, aimed at prioritizing children’s futures by revamping children’s social care, safeguarding vulnerable children, and providing essential assistance to those transitioning out of the care system.
By the age of 18, care leavers have already overcome more challenges than many face in a lifetime. They deserve our unwavering support, dedication, and a fair opportunity to thrive. Every child in the UK deserves the chance to flourish, regardless of their background or origins. This government is steadfast in its mission to achieve this goal, and these measures represent a significant stride towards its realization.
