“Dignitas Founder Minelli Chooses Assisted Dying”

Published on

Renowned for establishing the organization Dignitas, Ludwig Minelli chose to end his life at one of the assisted-dying clinics he founded, just days before his 93rd birthday. Dignitas confirmed his passing, stating that the Swiss founder and human rights advocate opted for voluntary assisted dying. In a tribute titled “Passing of a pioneer and warrior,” Dignitas honored Minelli’s lifelong commitment to empowering individuals to make autonomous choices, emphasizing his relentless pursuit of freedom and self-determination in end-of-life decisions.

The organization pledged to uphold Minelli’s legacy by advancing self-determination and freedom of choice globally. Dignitas, which has assisted over 4,000 individuals from various nations in their end-of-life decisions since its inception, highlighted Minelli’s pivotal role in shaping Swiss law through successful legal battles at both the national and European levels. His efforts led to significant legal precedents, including a 2011 European Court of Human Rights ruling affirming an individual’s right to determine the circumstances of their death.

While Switzerland permits assisted dying in specific situations, euthanasia, characterized by a third party administering a lethal substance, remains prohibited. In contrast, assisted suicide remains illegal in the United Kingdom under the Suicide Act of 1961. The legalization of assisted dying continues to spark debates and legislative discussions in various jurisdictions.
