“Panic Weekend Predicted: £3.43B Christmas Shopping Surge”

Published on

Britons are expected to splurge around £3.43 billion on eleventh-hour Christmas shopping during what is being referred to as “Panic Weekend.” VoucherCodes.co.uk, a discount website, projects that 49.6 million individuals will engage in their festive shopping activities over the upcoming weekend, with 36.8 million of them opting for in-store visits, providing a significant boost to town and city centers nationwide.

The peak spending is anticipated to hit an average of £2.3 million per minute on “Super Saturday,” totaling a staggering £1.75 billion. This imminent weekend serves as the final opportunity before Christmas, with many using it to either wrap up their gift purchases or even start them from scratch.

According to Zoe Morris, a savings expert at VoucherCodes.co.uk, despite one’s level of preparedness, there are always some last-minute Christmas essentials that catch people off guard, leading them to rush to stores. This year, an additional 10 million consumers are expected to partake in this “Panic Weekend,” marking a 26.2% surge in shoppers compared to the previous year.

The positive outlook for retailers comes from the projected spending surge over the weekend, showing a nearly 13% increase from the previous year. Recent data on foot traffic, indicating the number of shoppers out and about, saw a 5.1% rise last week, with the high street emerging as the preferred shopping destination.

Retail leaders find these trends encouraging as the Christmas countdown reaches its final phase. With the last ten days of trading in motion and “Super Saturday” around the corner, foot traffic is expected to rise further. As schools and many offices break for the holiday season this week, the strongest uplift is predicted over the weekend, with shoppers focusing on last-minute gift purchases and festive grocery shopping.

The accuracy of this optimistic forecast will only be confirmed once stores begin reporting their festive trading figures in early January. Concerns linger that the delayed Budget announcement on November 26 and apprehensions regarding potential tax hikes may have dampened consumer spending. Initial surveys post the statement by Chancellor Rachel Reeves reveal a lingering sense of pessimism among households, with concerns about future financial stability at an all-time high since late 2023.

According to Maryam Baluch, an economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, the latest indicators of household confidence post the Autumn Budget paint a disappointing picture. Sentiments towards financial outlook for the upcoming year have soured significantly, with household financial conditions deteriorating further in December. This has led to increased debt burdens and a decline in cash availability for spending, raising concerns about job security as well.

Overall, the subdued household confidence and early signs of job insecurity highlight the ongoing challenges facing UK households as they navigate an uncertain economic landscape heading into the new year. As spending intentions worsen amidst this deteriorating financial climate, consumers are unlikely to offer a substantial economic boost as 2026 approaches.
