The Trump administration has announced that supporters from Haiti will not be allowed entry into the United States next summer, despite the nation securing a spot in the upcoming World Cup. The country is among 42 nations qualified for the tournament set to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

President Trump’s travel ban, signed in June, includes restrictions on entry into the U.S. for people from 19 countries, such as Afghanistan, Myanmar, and others. While there are exemptions for players, coaches, and support staff participating in major sporting events, supporters will not be permitted to attend in person as the ban stands.

Haiti, which hasn’t played a home game in four years due to gang violence, faces challenges as their matches are held 500 miles away in Curacao. Coach Sebastien Migne highlighted the safety concerns, stating that it is too dangerous for him to reside in Haiti.

Despite the restrictions, fans can still apply for visas and interview appointments in hopes of attending the matches, although they may face ineligibility for entry. The State Department mentioned that exceptions could be granted for applicants whose travel aligns with U.S. national interests, though such exceptions will be rare.

During a meeting with the World Cup Task Force at the White House, President Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino discussed the economic opportunities the tournament brings. Trump expressed surprise at the projected economic impact of over $30 billion and inquired about the country’s share of the earnings.
