“Trump Sues BBC for $5B Over Edited Speech”

Published on

Donald Trump has initiated legal action against the BBC concerning the alteration of a speech he delivered to his supporters prior to the well-known Capitol riots of 2021. The former US president is seeking $5 billion in damages from the media organization for the broadcast of his speech on Panorama.

Before disclosing the specifics, Trump hinted at the lawsuit on Monday, emphasizing that the BBC had misrepresented his statements. This legal action pertains to an episode of the Panorama news program aired a week before the 2024 US election.

Addressing reporters at the Oval Office on December 15, Trump stated, “I’m suing the BBC for fabricating statements attributed to me. Quite literally, they manipulated my words.”

The show combined segments of Trump’s speech, creating the impression that he urged the crowd to march to the Capitol and engage in a confrontational manner. However, these phrases were pieced together from different parts of his speech that were delivered nearly an hour apart.

The BBC issued an apology for the editing error, acknowledging a lapse in judgment but contending that there was no legal foundation for Trump’s claim.

A spokesperson from Trump’s legal team characterized the editing as a bold attempt to meddle in the presidential election. They asserted, “The BBC has a consistent track record of misleading its audience in its coverage of President Trump, all to advance its own liberal political agenda.”

“The lawsuit mounted by President Trump is aimed at holding the BBC accountable for defamation and reckless interference in the election, mirroring actions taken against other untruthful mainstream media outlets,” the spokesperson added.

The lawsuit has been filed in the southern district of Florida, with the BBC yet to respond. It includes allegations of defamation and violating a Florida trade practices law, with the president seeking $5 billion in damages for each charge.

In November, the news outlet rebuffed Trump’s compensation demands, arguing against the defamation claim. However, Trump’s legal representatives assert that the BBC intentionally defamed him by maliciously and deceptively altering his speech.

The lawsuit against the BBC was filed in Trump’s personal capacity, naming the BBC and BBC Studios Productions as defendants. Legal representation is being provided by Alejandro Brito, Edward Paltzik, and Daniel Epstein.

The fallout resulted in the departure of Tim Davie, the BBC’s director-general, and Deborah Turness, the head of BBC News. Davie acknowledged errors and took responsibility upon resigning.

Trump has disavowed any responsibility for the incident, emphasizing that it was intended to obstruct Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s victory over him in the 2020 US presidential election.
