“Social Media’s Impact on Politics: Engaging Gen Z Voters”

Published on

In today’s political landscape, social media platforms play a pivotal role in shaping the success or demise of contemporary political movements. Platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have become crucial battlegrounds for political campaigns and messaging.

A notable illustration of this phenomenon was evident in the recent New York Mayoral election. Despite being an Irish resident in London, my Instagram feed was inundated with updates and content related to Zohran Mamdani’s successful mayoral campaign in New York City.

The power of hope and animosity in politics is highly influential and can be effectively harnessed through social media marketing strategies. Figures like Nigel Farage excel in condensing complex ideas into easily shareable soundbites for their followers.

A recent report by the charity Demos delved into the perspectives of 16-year-olds regarding social media, politics, the state of the nation, and their future aspirations. The findings revealed a disconnect between mainstream politicians and the youth demographic. While Nigel Farage garners admiration for his adept use of social media and straightforward communication style, Keir Starmer is described as being almost invisible rather than disliked.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has recently ventured into the realm of social media communication, particularly through platforms like TikTok, demonstrating a recognition of the importance of engaging with Generation Z. By embracing TikTok, Starmer aims to increase his visibility and connect with a younger audience, a move that has already attracted a significant following.

The Demos report stresses the significance of TikTok as a tool for democratic engagement, highlighting its role as a primary news source for many young individuals who find traditional media outdated and disconnected from their reality.

To resonate with young voters, political posts must embody a sense of fun, freshness, and authenticity. The ability to convey personality and energy through social media content is crucial as it shapes political identities even before policies come into consideration.

In the era of viral videos and memes, politicians need to adapt their communication strategies to capture the attention of younger voters. Authenticity and relatability are key aspects that can help political figures like Keir Starmer gain traction among the youth electorate.

While Starmer’s TikTok debut faced some initial challenges, including calls for a feline to lead the country, his videos have garnered significant views, indicating a potential for growth and engagement with a younger audience.

Labour faces a challenging journey in the realm of social media, but their efforts to embrace new communication channels demonstrate a willingness to engage with the evolving political landscape, albeit entering the game later than some competitors.
