NATO jets were scrambled in response to Russian Tu-22M3 strategic bombers showcasing their power over the Baltic Sea. Video footage captured Russian Tupolev bombers, specifically designed for nuclear weaponry, conducting a mission in the “neutral waters” of the Baltic region. The Russian defense ministry confirmed that the Aerospace Forces provided fighter escort with Su-35S and Su-27 aircraft. NATO warplanes monitored their movements as the long-range bombers were accompanied by foreign fighter jets during the over five-hour flight.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin denied any plans to attack Europe, calling such suggestions “ridiculous.” However, he reiterated his aggressive stance towards Ukraine, stating that the fighting would only cease once Ukrainian troops withdraw from the territories he aims to control in the Donbas region. Putin’s remarks dashed hopes of an early peace agreement, undermining efforts led by envoy Steve Witkoff, scheduled to visit Moscow the following week.
In a separate speech, Putin criticized Western leaders, accusing them of being “out of their minds” or dishonest for suggesting that Russia might expand its aggression beyond Ukraine to target other European nations. He dismissed claims of Russia’s intentions to attack Europe but expressed frustration with Western allegations aimed at stirring fear among their populations.
During a press conference, Putin mistakenly referred to a non-existent city, Komsomolsk, claiming Russian forces were advancing there. However, the city he likely meant was Kostiantynivka, located in the conflict zone. This error highlighted the ongoing tensions and misinformation surrounding the situation in Ukraine.
