Police have officially determined the cause of death of a man who tragically passed away while enjoying a rollercoaster ride at Universal Studios. Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, aged 32, lost his life after riding the newly opened Stardust Racers roller coaster at the Florida-based theme park on September 17. According to his girlfriend, who was seated beside him, Kevin leaned forward and hit his head on the metal lap bar during the initial part of the ride, rendering him unconscious. Subsequently, he sustained multiple head injuries as the ride progressed, despite her efforts to prevent further harm.
A medical examiner has concluded that Kevin’s death was accidental and resulted from “multiple blunt force injuries.” The Orange County Medical Examiner’s investigation found no evidence of any criminal activity leading up to Mr. Zavala’s tragic incident.
Kevin, who had a medical history of spinal cord atrophy and orthopedic issues such as a previous hip dislocation and fractured femur, was a frequent visitor to theme parks. At Universal Studios, he was accommodated on the Stardust Racers ride using a standard “lateral transfer” device for guests with mobility challenges. Staff ensured his safety by checking and electronically verifying the lap bar before the ride commenced.
During an interview with investigators, Kevin’s girlfriend, Javiliz Cruz-Robles, mentioned that employees had to press down on his lap bar multiple times to activate the ride’s safety indicator, although Kevin did not exhibit signs of discomfort. Unfortunately, as the rollercoaster descended its first hill, Kevin unexpectedly lunged forward, repeatedly striking his head on the metal bar throughout the ride, despite her attempts to restrain him.
Witnesses reported seeing Kevin slumped over with a head injury and his left leg lodged at a 90-degree angle between the lap bar at the ride’s conclusion. He was swiftly transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Following Kevin’s tragic death, his mother expressed a desire for answers regarding the circumstances surrounding her son’s passing, emphasizing the need for closure and peace in the wake of their profound loss.
Stardust Racers, a high-speed dual-launch roller coaster reaching speeds of up to 62mph, made its official debut in May at Universal Orlando Resort. Following a brief closure of 17 days post-incident in September, the ride resumed operations subsequent to both internal and independent investigations.
