“Arctic Cold Spell Brings 326-Mile Snow Band Across UK”

Published on

A vast 326-mile expanse of snow is set to move across the United Kingdom due to an Arctic cold spell triggering an unusual weather phenomenon. Recent meteorological maps from Ventusky display a snow band stretching from Ullapool in Scotland to Manchester, with projections indicating over 8mm of freezing rain may fall in Merseyside, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, and the west coast of Scotland. The Met Office defines freezing rain as a scarce form of liquid precipitation that hits a cold surface and rapidly freezes.

The cold weather will bring snow and ice, with temperatures expected to dip below freezing in Scotland and northern England. The Highlands are forecasted to experience snow today, prompting the Met Office to issue a yellow weather warning until 6pm. Forecasters caution residents in the Highlands to prepare for delays and disruptions as an area of rain moves from west Scotland, potentially resulting in snow accumulation over high terrain.

Another yellow snow and ice warning is in place for northern Scotland and the Isles, scheduled from 6pm today until 9pm on November 20. Additionally, there is a yellow ice warning in effect until 12pm today for northern England, southern, and central Scotland. The Met Office anticipates frontal systems crossing the UK, bringing a mix of rain, sleet, and snow, particularly affecting Scotland. Notably, the upcoming week is expected to remain cold, with the coldest period forecasted from Wednesday to Friday, potentially bringing impactful weather conditions, including sub-zero temperatures and significant wind chill.

Deputy Chief Forecaster Tom Crabtree warns that temperatures could plummet to -10°C overnight, with wintry snow showers extending southward through Wednesday and Thursday, potentially leading to snow accumulations in various regions. Despite sunny spells, daytime temperatures are expected to be significantly below average, accompanied by widespread frost during the evening. Citizens are advised to stay updated on the weather forecast as updates to warnings are possible during the first cold snap of the year.
