Diego Maradona Remembered: An Icon’s Enduring Legacy

Published on

Diego Maradona, widely regarded as the greatest football player of all time, passed away five years ago today. On this day of remembrance, we reflect on his heartfelt interview with the Mirror.

During our conversation, Maradona shared his early endorsement of VAR, discussed his struggles with cocaine addiction, and expressed his deep passion for football and family. Interestingly, as Argentina prepares for the 2026 World Cup with the release of a special commemorative coin honoring his iconic ‘goal of the century,’ we fondly recall Maradona’s choice to engage with the Mirror in 2005, where he expressed his admiration for English striker Wayne Rooney.

I vividly recall a moment after our discussion when Maradona was about to coach young players. When asked how he would react if one of them scored a goal, he playfully replied, “I would say good, very good,” with a twinkle in his eye.

Maradona was ahead of his time in advocating for video technology in football, despite knowing it would have invalidated his controversial ‘Hand of God’ goal. Despite previous conflicts with the media, he was remarkably polite during our interaction.

The transformed Maradona had shed weight, improved his fitness, and exuded a newfound sense of relaxation.

Reflecting on his personal life, Maradona expressed regret over not spending more time with his daughter due to his past struggles with cocaine addiction. He emphasized that life was now worth living again, having overcome his self-destructive behaviors.

When asked about the greatest football player ever, choosing between Pele, Johan Cruyff, or himself, Maradona humorously recounted his mother’s opinion that he was the best, as everyone listens to his mom.

In honor of the 40th anniversary next summer, Argentina has issued a special silver coin featuring Maradona’s legendary dribble goal against England in the 1986 World Cup. This iconic moment, recognized as FIFA’s Goal of the 20th Century, captures Maradona’s skill and artistry on the field.

The Central Bank of the Argentine Republic unveiled the commemorative coin dedicated to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, showcasing the historic play that remains etched in football history. The design symbolizes the love for football, encapsulating the essence of the sport.

On the reverse side of the coin, Maradona’s remarkable dribble past English players leading to a goal is depicted, culminating in a memorable victory for Argentina in the quarter-final match. The coin’s design captures the essence of Maradona’s brilliance on the field.

Argentina’s triumph in the 1986 World Cup, highlighted by Maradona’s exceptional performance, solidified their status as champions. The coin, measuring four centimeters in width and weighing 27 grams, bears a distinctive “reeded edge.”

The commemorative coins, valued at 10 Argentine pesos each, will be available for purchase globally, featuring a design that pays homage to Maradona’s enduring legacy and contribution to football.
