A shooting incident at Kentucky State University resulted in the death of a student and another critically injured. The parent of a student, Jacod Lee Bard, has been charged with murder for allegedly firing shots on the school’s campus in Frankfort. The victim, identified as 19-year-old De’Jon Fox of Indianapolis, lost his life in the shooting. The second student remains in critical condition.
Authorities have not disclosed the motive behind the shooting but have classified it as an isolated incident. Bard, hailing from Evansville, Indiana, faces charges of murder and first-degree assault. The altercation that led to the shooting prompted the immediate arrest of the parent by university police.
Speculations have arisen regarding a possible altercation involving Bard’s son prior to the shooting or the parent visiting the school to discuss his sons’ safety with administrators. However, these rumors have not been confirmed by Frankfort Assistant Police Chief Scott Tracy, who emphasized that it is too early in the investigation to provide specific details.
The shooting occurred at Whitney M. Young Jr. Hall, marking the second shooting incident in the university’s halls of residence within four months. University President Koffi C. Akakpo mentioned that additional police officers were deployed following the initial shooting and a comprehensive safety assessment will be conducted post the latest incident investigation.
Kentucky State University, a public historically Black institution with approximately 2,200 students, has faced this tragic event. Bard is currently being represented by a public defender from the Franklin County Department of Public Advocacy, which has refrained from commenting on the case.
