MI5 has issued a critical alert to Members of Parliament (MPs) following the uncovering of numerous attempts by Chinese spies to “recruit and nurture” key figures within the Westminster circle.
During a session in the Commons, Security Minister Dan Jarvis informed lawmakers that Chinese intelligence operatives are masquerading as businesses or external headhunters with the aim of ensnaring MPs, Lords, and personnel from the Parliament. It has been revealed that they are utilizing LinkedIn profiles under the guise of two fictitious women in an effort to gather intelligence.
Addressing a shocked audience of MPs, Mr. Jarvis conveyed, “Earlier today, MI5 sent out a warning to members of this House, the Lords, and Parliamentary staff regarding the ongoing targeting of our democratic institutions by Chinese operatives.”
He cautioned that China places little value on what information they deem significant and emphasized, “Our intelligence services have alerted us to China’s attempts to recruit and develop contacts with individuals possessing access to sensitive data about Parliament and the UK government. MI5 has confirmed that this operation is being conducted by a faction of Chinese intelligence officers, often concealed through front companies or external recruitment agencies.”
“It is not just politicians who should be on guard; staff working within Parliament, economists, think tank professionals, geopolitical advisors, and government officials have all been singled out for their networks and connections to lawmakers,” he added.
The Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, has engaged with her Chinese counterpart, making it unequivocally clear that such activities “will not be tolerated.” Mr. Jarvis revealed that the Government is set to combat “covert political financing” to eliminate potential espionage threats.
Additionally, measures are being devised by ministers to counter foreign interference, Mr. Jarvis disclosed.
In correspondence to parliamentarians on Tuesday, Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle underscored the attempts by the Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS) to establish connections within Westminster.
“Their objective is to gather intelligence and establish long-term relationships, utilizing professional networking websites, recruitment agencies, and consultants acting on their behalf,” he highlighted.
The alert identified two headhunters, Amanda Qiu (BR-YR Executive Search) and Shirly Shen (Internship Union), as individuals using LinkedIn profiles to make contact on behalf of China’s MSS, as per an email circulated.
The MI5 alert cautioned, “The Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS) is seeking to gather sensitive information on the UK to gain a strategic edge.”
“Following recent instances of targeting the UK Parliament for intelligence gathering, this espionage alert aims to shed light on the typical MSS techniques and strategies employed by a specific group of highly active operatives,” the alert added.
Mr. Jarvis disclosed a commitment of £170 million to update the sovereign-encrypted technology utilized by officials and an investment of £130 million to enhance the UK’s preparedness against threats posed by countries like China.
