A 30-year-old art teacher named Nicole Hernandez, also known as Nikki Baird, has been accused of engaging in sexual activities with a 17-year-old student in her Jeep. Hernandez allegedly started by befriending the boy and making physical advances towards him before progressing to a sexual relationship. The teacher, who was previously recognized as ‘teacher of the month’, reportedly sent inappropriate texts to the teenager proclaiming her desire to be with him.
The encounters between Hernandez and the student began at a middle school in Kansas and continued when the boy transferred to Wichita North High School. Hernandez allegedly manipulated the student by isolating him from others and escalating their interactions outside of school premises. The relationship allegedly involved hand-holding and discussions about kissing.
As reported by the Wichita Eagle, the student felt pressured to engage in sexual activities with Hernandez, who assured him they would not face consequences as he was graduating. After the student realized the inappropriate nature of their relationship and manipulation tactics, he ended contact with Hernandez. The student disclosed nude photos and letters from Hernandez to his family members and authorities.
Hernandez was arrested on May 22 and is set to appear in court on December 19 to face the charges against her. If you have experienced sexual assault, support and resources are available through www.rapecrisis.org.uk or by calling the national helpline on 0808 802 9999.
