Terence “Bud” Crawford, the recently crowned world super middleweight boxing champion, found himself in a difficult situation when he was stopped by the police in Omaha, NE, for suspected reckless driving during the early hours of a Saturday morning.
The boxer, accompanied by three passengers, was asked to exit the vehicle at gunpoint after officers noticed a firearm on the car’s floor, which was legally owned by one of Crawford’s companions.
Crawford, who was in town to celebrate his 38th birthday and victory over Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas, was immediately recognized by the officers during the incident.
Following the incident, a statement from the police mentioned that an internal affairs investigation was authorized by Police Chief Todd Schmaderer after a video circulating on social media captured the traffic stop involving Crawford.
The police officers observed the vehicle driving recklessly near North 12th and Capitol Avenue before conducting a traffic stop at Cass Street around 1:30 a.m.
Upon further inspection, it was revealed that all occupants, including Crawford and a member of his security team, were legally permitted to carry firearms. Crawford was issued a citation for reckless driving, and a police supervisor and lieutenant responded to the scene at Crawford’s request.
Omaha Mayor John Ewing emphasized the importance of trust between law enforcement and the community, expressing support for a thorough internal investigation to gather all facts transparently.
Qasim Shabazz, the head of Crawford’s security team, expressed concern over the situation, stating that he felt their lives were at risk during the encounter with the police.
