An American triple murderer, Stephen Bryant, who went on a killing spree in South Carolina in 2004, has been executed by firing squad after spending 20 years on death row. Bryant, 44, chose this method of execution over lethal injection or the electric chair. The execution took place with three prison employees using live ammunition.
During the execution, Bryant made no final statement but glanced briefly at the witnesses before the hood was placed over his head. He was shot 55 seconds later, causing a bullseye target marking his heart to fly off his chest. Bryant displayed minimal movement and was pronounced dead by a doctor shortly after.
Witnesses noted a wet spot on Bryant’s shirt where he was shot, and three family members of the victims were present during the execution. Bryant’s final meal request included a spicy seafood stir-fry, fried fish, egg rolls, stuffed shrimp, two candy bars, and German chocolate cake.
Bo King, a local lawyer specializing in death penalty cases, mentioned that Bryant had a genetic disorder and had suffered from abuse and substance abuse issues. Bryant confessed to the murder of Willard “TJ” Tietjen and two other men in brutal incidents before his execution.
Bryant’s execution makes him the seventh person to be put to death in South Carolina in the past 14 months, following a long hiatus due to the unavailability of lethal injection drugs. In the United States, Bryant is the 43rd man to be executed this year, with 14 more scheduled before year-end.
