Millions of households in the UK are set to receive communication regarding the Warm Home Discount scheme. This scheme offers a £150 reduction on electricity bills, directly applied to the energy provider rather than given as cash. Eligible recipients will be notified via mail starting October 20 if they were receiving specific benefits on August 24.
Residents in England and Wales will automatically receive the Warm Home Discount, while in Scotland, automatic payment is contingent upon receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit. Individuals entitled to benefits other than Pension Credit must manually apply through their energy supplier. Notably, there is no Warm Home Discount scheme in Northern Ireland.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has announced the removal of the high energy use requirement for the Warm Home Discount in England and Wales. This change is expected to increase the number of households benefiting from the scheme by an estimated 2.7 million, reaching a total of 6.1 million households.
Additionally, energy bills are anticipated to rise this winter, with the Ofgem price cap increasing to £1,755 for a typical dual fuel household paying by direct debit. This adjustment will be effective from October 1 to December 31, impacting those on standard variable rate (SVR) tariffs. While there is a price cap on unit charges and standing fees, the total energy bill is based on consumption levels.
The Ofgem price cap reflects the projected annual costs for a household consuming an average of 2,700 kWh of electricity and 11,500 kWh of gas.
