A tragic incident unfolded during a family vacation in Istanbul, Turkey, where a family of four, including two young children, lost their lives after being exposed to a pesticide used to eradicate bed bugs in their hotel room. The family, originally from Germany, fell ill just two days after arriving in Istanbul for their holiday on November 9.
The victims were identified as Cigdem Bocek, 27, her husband Servet, 38, and their children Masal, three, and Kadir Muhammet, six. Desperately seeking help, the father hailed a taxi and rushed his family to the nearest hospital as the situation worsened. Tragically, they became critically ill in their hotel room and were later pronounced dead.
Initially, it was suspected that the family suffered from food poisoning, but further investigations revealed that the pesticide aluminum phosphide, used in bed bug treatment in a neighboring room, may have seeped into the family’s room through the ventilation shaft, causing their poisoning. It was discovered that at least one worker from the pest control firm lacked the necessary certification.
CCTV footage showed the family checking into the hotel on November 9 and falling ill after exploring the city. Despite efforts to save them, Cigdem and her two children passed away hours later, while Servet lost his battle after six days in intensive care. Following the incident, the hotel was evacuated, and samples were collected for testing.
Authorities arrested 11 individuals, including hotel staff, in connection with the tragedy. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan assured a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the deaths. Family members and officials are seeking justice for the victims and demanding severe punishment for those responsible.
