UK Braces for Snowfall After Storm Claudia

Published on

The UK is set to experience snowfall after Storm Claudia, as the Met Office predicts wintry conditions. Cold air moving in from the north is expected to bring snow to various parts of the country. Snow has already been reported in northern Scotland, with more regions likely to see snow soon.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Holler warned of much colder temperatures, with potential snow and ice hazards, including temperatures dropping as low as -7C in some areas next week. BBC Weather forecasts wintry showers in northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, North Yorkshire Moors, west Wales, and southwest England, due to cold northerly winds affecting these exposed regions.

A clash between an Atlantic weather system and cold air is anticipated on Tuesday, potentially leading to further snowfall in inland Scotland, northern England, the Midlands, and even the southeast on Wednesday morning. Weather models indicate snow moving south from Scotland on Wednesday morning, with significant snowfall expected in northern England, Wales, the Midlands, and parts of the southwest, possibly accumulating up to 5cm in the Pennines.

Storm Claudia caused severe flooding in Wales, with a major incident declared in Monmouth after the River Monnow overflowed. Record levels of rainfall were reported in different regions, with punishing winds reaching up to 68mph in parts of Wales and England. The Welsh Government advised residents to follow official guidance from Natural Resources Wales, emergency services, and local authorities due to the ongoing impact of the storm.
