Firefighters responded to a significant fire in the heart of Glasgow city center, prompting the evacuation of a nearby H&M store. Witnesses described hearing ‘explosions’ as fire crews were dispatched around 4.30pm to tackle the blaze that originated at an electrical substation.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) deployed eight appliances to West Nile Street in Glasgow, urging the public to steer clear of the vicinity. The fire, which resulted in road closures and the evacuation of a retail store, has since been extinguished.

During the peak of the incident, over 50 firefighters, along with eight fire engines, a high reach appliance, and a command support unit, were on-site. The last fire engine departed around 9.40pm on Saturday, following which some closed roads were reopened as emergency services concluded their operations.

Witnesses recounted seeing smoke billowing several blocks away from the fire site, with authorities swiftly establishing cordons and managing the situation. Residents reported hearing loud noises resembling fireworks, along with visible flashes emanating from the affected area.

An SFRS spokesperson confirmed the absence of casualties following the building evacuation. Public cooperation in avoiding the area and nearby residents sealing windows and doors against smoke exposure was advised to safeguard health.

Notably, West Nile Street and other adjacent roads were temporarily closed due to the fire incident. The evacuation of the nearby H&M store on Buchanan Street was part of the precautionary measures taken.

According to Police Scotland, West Nile Street was shut down between Renfield Street and Bath Street following the fire report. Motorists were issued warnings to steer clear of the affected area.
