A Brazilian social media personality tragically passed away recently following the consumption of homemade whiskey believed to be contaminated with methanol at her 26th birthday celebration.

Yasmim Ângela Feitosa de Souza, an Instagram entertainer with a following of 23,000, celebrated her birthday in Petrolina, Brazil. She and her partner reportedly purchased the whiskey from a rural village near São Bento do Una and shared it with a friend during the festivities on Monday night.

According to de Souza’s mother, they consumed approximately one and a half liters of the whiskey. While her boyfriend felt unwell the next day, de Souza appeared to be in good spirits and interacted jovially with everyone.

However, she began feeling unwell later that night and quickly succumbed to the suspected poisoning, her mother disclosed. Both de Souza’s boyfriend and their friend, who also drank the whiskey, were hospitalized with suspected methanol poisoning. Their current conditions are unknown as of Thursday.

Investigations are ongoing into de Souza’s tragic death, as reported by g1. Methanol, a clear liquid used in various industrial applications, is known to cause harm to humans, with most cases of poisoning stemming from tainted beverages or products containing methanol.

Symptoms of methanol poisoning can include nausea, abdominal pain, visual disturbances, weakness, and varying levels of consciousness impairment, with severe cases potentially leading to death.

Authorities have seized the remaining whiskey for analysis, and the influencer’s funeral was held at Campo da Esperança Cemetery in Petrolina.
