Authorities are currently probing a peculiar incident at a state-operated liquor store where an intoxicated raccoon crashed through the ceiling, caused havoc on the premises, and was found passed out in the restroom. The unexpected break-in occurred in Virginia, with staff discovering broken bottles and a strong smell of alcohol on the scene. Initially believed to be a routine burglary, the situation took a bizarre turn when the culprit, a drunken raccoon, was located the following day, inebriated and slumped between a toilet and a bin.

Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter reported that the raccoon was “very intoxicated” when found and was subsequently safely secured and taken back to the shelter to sober up before questioning. After a brief period of rest, during which no signs of injury were observed aside from a possible hangover, the raccoon was released back into the wild. The animal had gained entry by breaking through a ceiling tile, disabling the store’s CCTV system in the process, leaving investigators without footage to determine if the raccoon specifically targeted the spirits. Staff described an aisle soaked in alcohol and littered with glass fragments as the raccoon rummaged through the stock, showing a preference for hard liquor over wine in a chaotic display.

The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority has not commented on the incident yet, which reflects a growing trend of wildlife encounters in the United States. Raccoons, known for their curiosity and climbing abilities, are frequently found in both rural and urban settings, where they exhibit resourcefulness in accessing human spaces. Experts attribute this behavior to urban food waste and habitat loss, forcing raccoons to seek food and shelter near populated areas.

In their natural habitat, raccoons have been observed consuming fermented fruit, leading to behaviors that mimic intoxication.
