Many British high streets are struggling due to online competition and consumer spending constraints, resulting in numerous vacant shops and closed businesses in town centers nationwide. However, there are some bright spots amidst the gloom. New data from Newmark’s 2025 retail Vitality Rankings highlights thriving town centers worth celebrating.
Cambridge, a university city, leads the list as the top shopping destination in the UK for 2025, benefiting from its affluent residents, student community, and lively nightlife. Chelsea in London climbed to second place, praised for its mix of upscale shops, pubs, and bars like Sloane Square. Kingston upon Thames in London secured third place, followed by Bath city center, Bluewater shopping center in Dartford, Wimbledon Village, and Milton Keynes.
Additional areas making strides in the rankings include Knightsbridge in London, Leeds, and Westfield Stratford City. The rise in foot traffic was most notable in larger cities and dedicated shopping centers, signaling improved performance this year. Newmark noted that while office attendance is increasing, hybrid work models continue to support retailers in boosting sales.
Shoppers, especially in major cities and shopping centers, are making larger purchases and spending more, rather than engaging in casual browsing or small purchases. However, not all regions saw growth, with places like Cobham in Surrey, Oxford city center, and Harrogate experiencing declines in rankings.
Will Chamberlain, associate director at Newmark, mentioned a trend of retailers consolidating stores in low-footfall areas to focus on high-traffic locations that drive sales. Providing personalized and memorable in-store experiences is a key strategy for retailers aiming to enhance sales performance.
