A soon-to-be father who fell into a coma after a harrowing car crash woke up briefly to accuse his pregnant girlfriend of being responsible for his condition. Daniel Waterman sustained severe injuries from the collision, including shattered bones, spinal damage, and punctured lungs, leading him into a coma following the February 9 incident. In a surprising turn of events in May, Daniel regained consciousness enough to convey a distressing message to investigators using a whiteboard, despite his limited ability to speak.
In his communication, Daniel disclosed a heated argument between himself and his partner, Leigha Mumby, triggered by her pregnancy revelation and jealousy over a text message from a female friend. The altercation escalated as they drove along Interstate 95 in Florida, with Mumby allegedly driving recklessly, causing Daniel to fear for his safety and attempt to escape from the moving vehicle.
According to Daniel’s account, Mumby accelerated the car to high speeds while expressing indifference to his safety, ultimately purposefully crashing the car into a tree. Mumby, who also sustained injuries, later claimed ignorance of the events leading to the crash, waking up in excruciating pain post-accident. However, investigators corroborated Daniel’s version of events using the car’s event data recorder.
Despite initial signs of recovery, Daniel’s health took a tragic turn, leading to his passing due to pneumonia on October 8. Mumby was subsequently charged with vehicular homicide and detained. Daniel’s family is now fighting for custody of his unborn child, pending a paternity test, with the intention to ensure the child grows up understanding their father’s character and values.
Mumby has pleaded not guilty to the initial charges against her, although no plea has been recorded for the homicide charge. The family’s determination to uphold Daniel’s memory and influence in his child’s life remains unwavering, as they seek justice and closure in the wake of this heartbreaking ordeal.
