“15,000+ Dogs Confiscated, 3,600 Euthanized Amid Calls for Stricter Laws”

New data reveals that over 15,000 dogs have been confiscated by law enforcement since the introduction of the XL Bully ban, with an additional 3,600 dogs euthanized. Despite the XL Bully being included in the list of prohibited breeds under the Dangerous Dogs Act, tragic incidents involving these dogs continue to occur, such as the recent fatality of a three-month-old infant in Wales at the hands of a six-year-old dog that was legally registered prior to the ban.

Calls for a reevaluation of dog-related legislation have been amplified following these events, advocating for stricter regulations on breeding practices and improved education for owners to prevent the development of aggressive behaviors in dogs.

Fresh statistics have unveiled the top 10 regions where dogs were seized and euthanized by authorities. Puppies.co.uk, a prominent platform for dog transactions, submitted a Freedom of Information request to police departments nationwide, seeking information on the number of dogs confiscated and/or put down since November 2023. Out of 32 responses received, eight, including Police Scotland, declined to disclose the information.

The data indicates that a total of 15,258 dogs were seized across the UK, with 3,638 of them meeting a tragic fate. On average, 636 dogs were confiscated monthly, with 152 of them being euthanized. The Metropolitan Police clarified that their high numbers were attributable to their jurisdiction covering the largest population area among all police forces in the country.

In a recent court case, the owner of a cockapoo that attacked a three-year-old girl near her school was given a rigorous community order and instructed to pay £3,488 in costs. The dog, Reggie, was allowed to return home under the condition of constant muzzling and being kept on a short leash. The victim, Bunnie Skinley, required surgery following the incident in Rainham, Essex.

In another distressing event, Joanne Goffey recounted how her five-year-old autistic son, Roman, was assaulted by a dog, suspected to be a bull breed, while walking home from school. The aggressive dog inflicted severe injuries to the child’s eye, ears, and cheeks, necessitating surgical intervention.

A tragic incident in September highlighted the risks associated with dog ownership when Michelle Hempstead, 28, lost her life after being bitten by one of her dogs during a scuffle between her pets over chicken nuggets. The inquest revealed that her Pomeranian, Pom, and mastiff rottweiler mix, Trigg, were involved in the fatal encounter.

Amid growing concerns, organizations like the RSPCA advocate for a shift from breed-specific laws towards promoting responsible ownership, regulating breeding practices, and implementing early intervention strategies to prevent dog attacks. The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs announced the formation of a responsible dog ownership taskforce to explore additional measures for safeguarding people and animals from dog-related incidents.

Responding to the findings, puppies.co.uk expressed deep concern over the persistent dog attacks post the XL Bully ban, emphasizing the importance of addressing root causes like poor breeding and irresponsible ownership rather than focusing solely on breed-specific issues. The platform stressed the need for stringent breeding regulations, responsible ownership practices, and early intervention protocols to mitigate risks associated with dog aggression.
