Ricky Hatton was reported to be in good spirits during a visit from his family shortly before his passing, as revealed in a Coroner’s Court session on Thursday. The session, overseen by Alison Mutch at South Manchester’s Coroner’s Court in Stockport, disclosed preliminary findings indicating ‘hanging’ as the likely cause of death. A comprehensive inquest is scheduled for March 20, 2026.
Paul Speak, a close friend and manager of Hatton, discovered him unresponsive at his residence in Gee Cross, Hyde, on September 14. They were planning to travel to Dubai from Manchester Airport. Greater Manchester Police confirmed Hatton’s passing, stating no suspicious circumstances were suspected, and the case was referred to the coroner.
According to statements at the hearing, Hatton was seen in good health by family members two days before his discovery, but he failed to attend an event the following day, with no details of the event disclosed in court. Speak described finding Hatton unresponsive, stating his initial assumption of oversleeping due to the absence of lights. Subsequently, emergency services were contacted, with Speak expressing his belief that Hatton did not intend harm.
Recently, Hatton’s funeral procession took place in Manchester, attracting thousands of mourners. Notable personalities such as Tyson Fury, Liam Gallagher, Frank Bruno, Tony Bellew, Wayne Rooney, Freddie Flintoff, Paddy McGuinness, and Amir Khan attended the service. Eulogies highlighted Hatton’s status as both a sporting icon and a hero of the working class. The procession culminated in a private committal ceremony attended only by close family members.
