“British Email Users Face Deluge of Fraudulent Emails”

Published on

British email users are currently inundated with a continuous stream of fraudulent emails. Action Fraud has disclosed that a staggering 43 million suspicious emails were reported between January and May 2025, highlighting the need for vigilance when checking email inboxes.

Recent guidance emphasizes the importance of reporting suspicious emails rather than disregarding them. This proactive approach can help prevent cybercriminals from targeting others in the future.

Action Fraud revealed that by May 2025, over 42 million suspicious emails had been reported to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service, leading to the removal of 400,000 scam websites by the National Cyber Security Centre. Reporting suspicious emails is a straightforward process – simply forward any questionable emails to report@phishing.gov.uk.

The National Cyber Security Centre warns that scam emails typically aim to lure recipients into clicking malicious links that could result in downloading viruses or stealing personal information, a tactic known as ‘phishing.’ By promptly reporting phishing attempts, individuals can reduce the volume of scam emails received, enhance personal cybersecurity, and safeguard others from online cybercrime.

Given the prevalence of malicious emails targeting popular services like Netflix and Spotify, users are advised to exercise caution and avoid clicking on suspicious links. For instance, Amazon recently alerted customers to a scam falsely claiming a rise in Prime subscription fees, urging users to click on a cancel link. Amazon recommended verifying Prime membership through the official app or website to avoid falling victim to such scams.
