The new regulations, introduced by the UK regulator Ofcom, now require individuals to verify their age before accessing adult websites.

This change aims to prevent children from being exposed to inappropriate content online, as statistics from Ofcom reveal that 8% of children aged 8-14 in the UK have visited adult sites. Ofcom emphasized the importance of safeguarding children from harmful online material and described the new measure as a pivotal step in this direction.

The requirement to provide personal details such as names, addresses, and financial information to access adult content has raised concerns among UK internet users. As a result, there has been a surge in the use of VPNs following the recent update. VPNs serve to conceal IP addresses and encrypt online activities, enabling users to mask their location and access region-restricted content, such as the American version of Netflix or UK-based services like Sky Go and BBC iPlayer when abroad.

While the exact influence of the Ofcom web restriction on VPN usage remains uncertain, one VPN provider, Proton VPN, reported a remarkable 1,400% increase in sign-ups compared to its usual baseline since the implementation of the new rules on July 25. This surge in VPN usage aligns with patterns observed by Proton VPN during significant global events.

Furthermore, several VPN services have experienced a surge in popularity, with five VPN applications currently ranking among the top 10 most downloaded apps in UK app stores. Despite the positive intentions behind Ofcom’s update to enhance online child safety, some individuals have expressed apprehensions regarding the necessity to share sensitive personal information with unfamiliar entities.

Jake Moore, Global Cybersecurity Advisor at ESET, highlighted potential privacy and security risks associated with the Online Safety Act’s age verification procedures, cautioning against sharing sensitive data with untrusted sources. Users considering VPN usage are advised to opt for reputable providers and avoid free VPN services that may compromise data security and privacy.
