“Connecticut Cannibal Granted Conditional Release”

Published on

A man known as the Connecticut Cannibal, Tyree Smith, brutally killed a homeless man named Angel Gonzalez in 2011 by striking him with a hatchet and consuming parts of his brain and eyeball. Smith, who was later deemed not guilty of murder by reason of insanity, was placed in Whiting Forensic Hospital for 60 years in 2013. Recently, the Psychiatric Security Review Board granted Smith conditional release, citing his stabilized mental health conditions due to medication and treatment.

Smith, now in a supervised community setting, is required to undergo continued treatment and adhere to strict conditions. Despite exhibiting clinical stability and compliance with medication and therapy, prison records reveal past altercations with fellow inmates. Gonzalez’s sister-in-law, Talitha Frazier, remains skeptical of Smith’s release, expressing concerns about his potential threat to society.

During a court appearance, Smith expressed remorse for Gonzalez’s death, stating that his actions were not a true reflection of himself. Frazier, moved by Smith’s apology, acknowledged his unexpected display of regret. Despite this, she remains cautious about his intentions and the impact of his past violent behavior.
