“UK 3G Network Shutdown: Impact on Older Users”

Published on

Significant changes are underway this year that may impact access to data on devices for some individuals. The gradual phasing out of the UK’s 3G service in favor of faster and more reliable 4G and 5G networks is in progress. Leading UK providers like EE, Vodafone, and now O2 have already ceased their 3G services.

While most users won’t experience any disruptions, certain older and more vulnerable customers might face phone functionality issues if they have not upgraded to newer devices yet.

Considering the essential role phones play in keeping people connected, the potential impact is a matter of concern.

To address this situation, Virgin Media O2 has partnered with Age UK to increase awareness about the UK’s 3G network shutdown.

Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK, stated, “The 3G switch-off could be overwhelming for many older individuals, so it’s crucial that we provide support to those affected.”

O2 is set to complete the discontinuation of its 3G signal by the year-end, meaning individuals with devices incompatible with 4G or 5G will lose access to services like WhatsApp.

The process has already commenced, with O2 first deactivating 3G in Durham, followed by Norwich, Telford, and Guildford. Torquay will be the next location before the entire network shutdown by the end of the year.

Virgin Media O2 and Age UK are collaborating to offer extra assistance to a small segment of older mobile users needing handset upgrades to continue using mobile data post the 3G phase-out.

“Virgin Media O2 will support Age UK’s efforts in crafting and disseminating informative content tailored for older individuals and their families to aid their understanding of the 3G switch-off. The charity will furnish crucial information on its website and social media platforms and, through its Advice Line, assist older individuals and their families seeking guidance related to the 3G switch-off,” said Virgin Media O2.

Age UK will provide in-person awareness sessions for “disadvantaged older people” to ensure they are informed about the transition.

These services will also be extended to older customers and those using providers operating on the O2 network such as Giffgaff, Tesco Mobile, and Sky Mobile.

Wondering if you’re affected? Virgin Media O2 will directly contact customers without 4G or 5G handsets, offering free compatible devices to identified vulnerable customers and handset discounts to others.

For users with 3G-only devices, support for 2G networks will be available post the 3G switch-off, ensuring continued voice calls and text messaging capabilities.

Fortunately, the impact of this transition is expected to be minimal, as Virgin Media O2 reports that less than 2% of all network data flows through its 3G network.

“Individuals feeling anxious and seeking support can reach out to their provider for more information on available options to prepare for the change, or contact Age UK’s Advice Line for free at 0800 169 65 65,” advised Age UK’s Abrahams.
