This week on The Handmaid’s Tale, June Osborne (portrayed by Elisabeth Moss) and Moira (played by Samira Wiley) were seen hatching a plan to infiltrate Jezebel’s.
The pair found themselves at odds, with June hesitant about her friend returning to the brothel.
In the meantime, viewers witnessed Janine being coerced into prostitution at Jezebel’s after her stint as a handmaid, her current occupation proving no better than her previous one.
She was entirely at the mercy of the commanders, especially Commander Bell (Timothy Simons), who had developed a dangerous obsession with her, reports the Mirror US.
Commander Bell was consumed with jealousy when he suspected Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) was sleeping with Janine.
A number of fans have taken to Reddit to speculate a grim future for Janine, who is desperate to be reunited with her daughter.
One Reddit user posted: “Military operation at Jezebel’s. Liberation for Janine?”
Another speculated: “Next episode is titled Janine so my guess is they will either liberate her or she will die and become a Martyr [sic].”
A third suggested: “Joseph Lawrence told Janine that her daughter has a good life. Almost like a final goodbye.
“I don’t like that at all. Is that foreshadowing. Is Janine going to die in the middle of trying to get her out?”
“Gonna lose my mind if she’s trying to escape not knowing June and Moira are there to save her and she dies [sic],” a fourth fan wrote.
One viewer ominously penned: “I cannot imagine a world in which Janine has a happy ending….”
Another fan speculated: “What are the odds that Janine doesn’t survive and somehow Naomi doesn’t but Joseph Lawrence gets out and ends up raising Angela himself out of guilt and being the best goddamn father ever [sic].”
Others were adamant that Janine deserved a happy ending, with one supporter posting: “I hope they get Janine out” – a sentiment echoed by another who said: “They better get my girl Janine out”.
On X (formerly Twitter), other fans shared their thoughts on the character, with one stating: “All I want is for Janine to stab Jonah Ryan in the face. Respectfully. #TheHandmaidsTale.” The comment was a reference to actor Simons’ character in Veep.
Another remarked: “Just watched Ep.04. Something tells me Commander Lawrence might not make it to the final episodes. He just better save Janine first! #TheHandmaidsTale [sic].
“JANINE BETTER SURVIVE THIS SEASON #TheHandmaidsTale [sic],” declared another.
Given this is the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, the stakes are higher than ever, and any character could meet their end.
Margaret Atwood’s 2019 sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments, reveals the fate of some characters, but Janine seems to be largely overlooked.
This suggests that Janine’s fate is potentially uncertain and could swing either way in the Hulu series.
