“Border Communities Divided Over Lake Ontario Dispute”

Published on

At his marina in Sackets Harbor, New York, Mayor Alex Morgia admires the picturesque view of Lake Ontario on a cloudy Wednesday afternoon. Morgia describes the beauty of the sunsets over the lake, even on overcast days, highlighting the vibrant colors that peek through the clouds.

Situated on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, Sackets Harbor is embroiled in a dispute between the United States and Canada over tariffs and President Donald Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” The harbor, mentioned in Trump’s executive order, has a historical significance, having been the site of major battles during the War of 1812.

While Mayor Morgia doubts widespread support for renaming the lake, he, along with other residents and officials in upstate New York near the Canadian border, express concerns about the escalating tensions potentially damaging the close ties between the two countries and harming their communities.

Corey Fram, the director of the Thousand Islands Regional Tourism Development Corporation, worries about the negative impact of declining Canadian spending and border crossings following Trump’s reelection. Fram emphasizes the emotional toll felt in border communities due to the economic repercussions of the ongoing trade disputes.

Anthony Adamczyk, the executive director of the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority, reports a significant decrease in traffic volume from Canada at the border crossing, with toll revenue plummeting in 2025 compared to the previous year. The long-term worry is that the lower influx of Canadian tourists may become a permanent trend, affecting the local economy.

Local residents in Ogdensburg and Sackets Harbor express mixed opinions on Trump’s trade tactics. While some believe in the benefits of equalizing trade, others feel the negative impact of increased tariffs. Republican assemblyman Scott Gray acknowledges residents’ concerns and calls for a balanced approach in trade negotiations to preserve the economic exchange between the U.S. and Canada.

The residents’ sentiments reflect a range of views on Trump’s actions, with some praising his policies for leveling the economic playing field, while others express disappointment over rising costs and unmet promises. The complex dynamics surrounding the trade disputes and Lake Ontario’s renaming continue to divide opinions among the residents of these border communities.
