Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has confirmed that one of the 30 Canadian citizens and permanent residents who went missing following the devastating floods in the border area between Nepal and China has been located unharmed. The individual had been unreachable due to communication disruptions but managed to make contact on Tuesday.
The flash floods occurred a week ago when a glacier collapsed in the Himalayan border region shared by Nepal and China. The aftermath left a trail of destruction.
Over 1,100 people lost their lives, and more than 3,900 individuals are still unaccounted for. Nepal’s Foreign Ministry reported that approximately 590 foreign nationals from 39 different countries are among those missing.
Minister Anand announced that Canada will dispatch over 18,000 emergency supplies from the Canadian Red Cross reserves to the affected region. This aid effort supplements the $5 million in humanitarian assistance that Ottawa had already committed to supporting the relief operations.
