Alex Gibney’s extensive documentary “Musk” delves deep into the life of tech magnate Elon Musk, painting a grim and unsettling portrait. Drawing parallels to the impactful nature of “An Inconvenient Truth” on climate change awareness, Gibney’s film sheds light on Musk’s journey from a budding entrepreneur to a figure orchestrating significant events like the dismantling of USAID and his controversial plans for a survivalist community.

During an interview before the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Gibney revealed the challenges faced, including legal threats from Musk and the need to expand the documentary to accommodate the tech mogul’s evolving influence, leading to its nearly four-hour runtime. The intricate relationship between the filmmaker and Musk’s sphere, coupled with uncertainties about international distribution due to potential political pressure, added tension to the project.

Despite the initial admiration for Musk, Gibney’s perspective shifted as he delved deeper into the narrative, facing obstacles in securing interviews with Musk and his associates. The use of an AI-generated avatar narrating Musk’s own words in the documentary added a unique layer of critique, highlighting the darker facets of his persona and involvement in political landscapes.

Addressing Musk’s controversial actions and alleged impact on governmental structures, the film weaves together testimonies and insights that question the unchecked power of tech billionaires and the public’s complicity in allowing such influence to grow unchecked. Gibney’s intent to provoke critical thinking and a reevaluation of societal values, particularly in the context of Musk’s rise to power, underlines the film’s cautionary message for audiences.
