NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, hailing from Hamilton and having a background in junior hockey with the Ottawa 67’s, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, as confirmed by the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Mayich, aged 21, was selected by the St. Louis Blues as a defenseman in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft.
According to his player record, Mayich played minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the 67’s. The OHL reported that he was admitted to the hospital on August 20 while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season in Arizona.
The St. Louis Blues have expressed their support and prayers for Mayich’s recovery. Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, disclosed that a student on the hockey team collapsed during an outdoor morning exercise session and is currently hospitalized. The university refrained from disclosing the student’s identity and mentioned that the workout circumstances are under review.
Doug Armstrong, the Blues’ president of hockey operations, conveyed the organization’s solidarity with Mayich, stating that they are praying for his comfort and recovery during his medical treatment in Arizona. He also extended the organization’s deepest support to Mayich’s family, friends, and teammates.
In a news release, OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford echoed similar sentiments, expressing thoughts for Mayich, his parents, and his entire family. The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly the Huskies, previously celebrated Mayich when he signed with the ’67s in 2021 and when the Blues drafted him in 2023. The Huskies acknowledged his long-standing association with the club since the age of nine.
