German authorities are looking into a drone equipped with explosives and a detonator discovered at Leipzig airport, as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov indicates Moscow’s readiness to enhance retaliation against nations aiding Ukraine. Lavrov, speaking to VGTRK, Russia’s state media, emphasized a more forceful approach to dismantle support for Kyiv’s military capabilities.
The drone, carrying an unidentified explosive device, was found in the cargo operations zone’s security area near the south runway of Leipzig airport, classified as critical infrastructure. Leipzig serves as a key NATO airport facilitating the transportation of weaponry, ammunition, arms, and other military supplies to Ukraine via flights operated by Ukrainian cargo firms.
The presence of the drone next to a Ukrainian cargo aircraft represents a heightened level of risk for Germany, according to the country’s interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt. He stated that the incident appears to be part of a sophisticated hybrid threat and not the work of amateurs.
While German authorities are conducting investigations and have not disclosed the drone’s origin, U.S. intelligence officials informed the Wall Street Journal that intelligence reports link the drone to the Russian government. Berlin is responding cautiously, enhancing anti-drone capabilities and refraining from premature accusations.
Dobrindt highlighted that Russia is employing various tactics like drones, espionage, sabotage, and influence operations in Europe, especially ahead of upcoming regional elections in Germany. He mentioned that Germany faces constant hybrid warfare threats, including espionage, cyber attacks, and covert actions by foreign entities seeking to destabilize the country and bring about political changes.
In a recent development, a man suspected of spying for Russia and gathering intelligence on military support for Ukraine and German defense industry companies was arrested by German federal prosecutors. The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has been monitoring Russia’s online interference in Germany through a campaign called Operation Overload, focusing on undermining Ukraine’s war efforts and destabilizing democracies.
Dobrindt warned of disinformation attempts influencing German politics and society, especially during regional elections. Hans-Jakob Schindler, senior director of the Counter Extremism Project, described the drone incident in Leipzig as an aggressive escalation of Russia’s interference tactics, testing Germany’s tolerance levels. Schindler raised concerns about the shift towards more physical attacks and the blurred line between defense and conventional conflict.
Schindler emphasized Lavrov’s statements as a departure from Russia’s past denials of interference in Western countries, viewing them as both an admission of guilt and a signal of heightened aggression towards Europe and NATO.
