“Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse” Revives Classic Franchise

Published on

In 1986, the Nintendo Entertainment System featured the iconic game, “Castlevania,” known for its monster battles, challenging gameplay, and catchy soundtrack. Over the past four decades, the series has expanded with numerous sequels, spinoffs, and related media. However, the franchise has been dormant since the release of its last new installment in 2014 by its publisher, Konami from Japan.

The latest addition, “Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse,” seeks to attract both new and long-time fans by drawing inspiration from various chapters of the series’ history and indie games influenced by it. The game offers a revitalizing experience by combining classic 2D exploration with stunning artistry, although its high difficulty level may pose a challenge for newcomers to the genre.

The storyline revolves around Rose Belmont, the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades, prominent characters from “Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse” released in 1989. As the narrative unfolds in 1499 Paris amidst a monster invasion, Rose embarks on a quest to uncover the mysteries plaguing the city while grappling with a curse inherited from her mother.

“Belmont’s Curse” adopts a gameplay style reminiscent of the beloved 1997 title, “Symphony of the Night,” integrating elements from Nintendo’s Metroid and Zelda franchises. Players guide Rose through the intricate Parisian landscape and Dracula’s castle, encountering obstacles that necessitate backtracking after acquiring new abilities or gear.

While the game offers a nostalgic “Metroidvania” experience, featuring engaging combat mechanics and intricate level design, it poses a considerable challenge due to faster enemy movements and formidable attacks. Players must utilize their skills and resourcefulness to navigate perilous encounters and overcome treacherous trap rooms scattered throughout the game.

Despite its demanding gameplay, “Belmont’s Curse” shines through its exceptional visuals and art direction, showcasing vibrant environments and dynamic soundtracks that enhance the immersive experience. The game’s presentation captures the essence of the series, from the detailed settings of Paris to the grandeur of Dracula’s castle, accompanied by a captivating musical score.

Notably, the Nintendo Switch version of the game faced performance issues during the review period, including graphical glitches, extended loading times, and input lag affecting gameplay fluidity. However, the Xbox Series X version provided a smoother experience. Konami has promised an update to address these concerns across all platforms, ensuring a more optimized gaming experience for players.
