“Edmonton Pride Festival Faces Bomb Threat, Backs Police Presence”

Published on

An organizer of the Edmonton Pride Festival disclosed that a bomb threat targeted this weekend’s parade and affirmed the organization’s support for the police presence at the event. Trevor Watson, the festival’s executive producer, shared at a press briefing on Tuesday that a local NDP MLA reported the threatening call to the police office several weeks ago.

Acknowledging diverse perceptions of safety, Watson emphasized that measures meant to ensure security can evoke fear or distress in certain individuals. The festival, in collaboration with the Edmonton Police Service (EPS), refrained from identifying the MLA’s office contacted during the threat incident.

EPS Deputy Chief Nicole Chapdelaine confirmed that the hate crimes unit investigated the threat, deeming it non-credible but recognizing the impact of such incidents on public safety. Watson explained the tough decision-making process faced by the festival and emphasized the importance of not compromising community safety.

Amid controversies, including the withdrawal of multiple 2SLGBTQ+ groups over policing concerns, the festival addressed misinformation and the necessity of enhanced safety measures following the bomb threat. Watson clarified that while changes were made to safety protocols, there was no alternative to engaging EPS for public safety measures.

Expressing regret over communication lapses and the resulting discomfort within marginalized communities, Watson extended apologies and committed to a mediation process in the fall to foster better understanding and collaboration moving forward. The joint efforts of EPS and the festival highlighted the escalating safety concerns affecting 2SLGBTQ+ communities, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and support.

Recent data presented to the Edmonton police commission underscored the prevalence of hate crimes targeting the 2SLGBTQ+ community in the city. City officials also cited a rise in hate crimes and incidents against the 2SLGBTQ+ community from 2020 to 2025, underscoring the urgency of addressing these issues effectively.
