“Comedians Struggle as SiriusXM Channel Shifts to Prominent Figures”

Published on

Comedian Liz Miele has recently faced a significant decrease in her earnings, a situation shared by many others. SiriusXM has discontinued its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, which previously showcased over 800 comedians on a rotating basis, and has introduced a new channel owned by renowned comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.

This change has resulted in a loss of income and exposure for Miele and numerous working-class comedians, with prominent celebrity comics now dominating the platform. Miele expressed how crucial Sirius XM was for her financial stability last year, highlighting the impact on fellow comedians who rely on this platform to make ends meet.

Despite promises from Maniscalco and SiriusXM to offer opportunities for comedians at various career stages, industry advocacy group Stand Up for Standup reveals a different reality. Before the channel transition, Raw Comedy featured over 800 comedians monthly, each earning $15 in royalties per play. However, the revamped channel now only includes 275 comedians, with the top 50 artists receiving over 75% of the plays, including renowned figures like Chris Rock and Kevin Hart.

Miele commented on this shift, emphasizing the concentration of wealth among a select group of comedians who no longer need the support that others relied on. The absence of platforms like SiriusXM poses a challenge for emerging comedians to gain visibility and opportunities similar to what Maniscalco experienced in his career.

Canadian comedian Danish Anwar shared how his royalties from Raw Comedy decreased by 30 to 40%, impacting his income and that of his peers. Many Canadian comics pursuing careers in the U.S. depend on these royalties to maintain their work visas, potentially forcing some to return home due to the loss of this crucial income source.

High-profile comedians like Patton Oswalt and Michelle Wolf have urged Maniscalco to provide space for emerging comedians on the channel to nurture their careers. Maniscalco, however, clarified that the decision to end Raw Comedy was made by SiriusXM before his involvement, citing the channel’s underperformance.

While Maniscalco pledges to collaborate with SiriusXM to feature a diverse range of comedic voices on his channel, Anwar remains skeptical, emphasizing the need for concrete actions rather than mere statements. The situation has led comedians to reflect on the need for unity within the industry to address issues such as pay disparities and poor labor practices.

Despite the challenges, comedians are hopeful for positive changes that could lead to a more equitable and supportive environment within the comedy industry.
