Student loses hand in clashes at French school protest

Published on

A high school student in northern France suffered a severe hand injury during clashes between protesters and riot police, a local official confirmed. The incident occurred in Lens as student demonstrations continued against issues such as underfunding, overcrowding, and deteriorating school facilities.

According to La Voix du Nord, the 15-year-old lost his hand and part of his lower arm while handling a police stun grenade that unexpectedly detonated. François-Xavier Lauch, the prefect of Pas-de-Calais, mentioned that around 200-250 protesters were involved in throwing objects at the police during the confrontation.

As the wave of school protests entered its third week, concerns arose about the involvement of various political factions. With the upcoming election to replace President Emmanuel Macron, accusations were made by the government and the far-right National Rally against the hard-left France Unbowed (LFI) for allegedly fueling the protests. However, LFI leaders denied these allegations.

Education Minister Edouard Geffray noted a decline in protest participation and announced plans to establish a platform for students to voice their grievances and implement targeted actions in specific schools. Meanwhile, rights groups criticized the police for using aggressive tactics, including batons, tear gas, and other riot-control measures against minors.

Amid ongoing investigations into police conduct, attention was drawn to a case involving a 16-year-old who reportedly sustained an eye injury from rubber bullets fired by the police. The LFI, led by presidential candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon, refuted claims of endorsing violence and criticized the government for politicizing the situation at the expense of students’ well-being.

The Justice Ministry disclosed that over 5,000 individuals, predominantly minors, have been arrested since the protests began. More than 1,800 people are facing prosecution, with the majority being minors, although specific charges were not detailed. The demonstrations have intensified pressure on the government, impacting financial markets and raising borrowing costs.

With hundreds of high schools affected by closures and blockades, the unrest persisted ahead of a nationwide protest scheduled for the following day. The protests, which originated in Paris and expanded to other regions, have been characterized by escalating tensions and instances of violence.

Efforts to restore order and address the disruptions were emphasized by government officials, including the need to ensure the safety of students and educators. The vandalism and disturbances witnessed at various educational institutions underscored the challenges faced in maintaining a conducive learning environment amidst the ongoing unrest.

As the situation unfolds, concerns loom over the potential escalation of violence during planned demonstrations, particularly in central Paris. Security measures are being heightened to prevent further unrest, with a focus on preventing radical groups from exploiting the protests for their agendas. Trade union representatives have pledged to support and safeguard the students during the upcoming demonstrations, expressing dismay over the recent developments and government responses.
