“Corrections Head Steps Down Amid Financial Probe”

Published on

The head of correctional facilities in Newfoundland and Labrador has stepped down from the position, prompting the province to involve the auditor general after uncovering financial and administrative inconsistencies at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary in St. John’s. The Department of Justice and Public Safety disclosed to CBC News on Tuesday that an internal examination has been initiated to scrutinize the financial and administrative procedures at the province’s primary correctional institution.

Confirming the presence of financial and administrative irregularities at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary, the Department of Justice and Public Safety emphasized its commitment to addressing such issues promptly and seriously. Dan Chafe, who has overseen five correctional facilities and two lockups as the Superintendent of Prisons since 2020, previously held the position of high sheriff for five years.

While the department refrained from discussing Chafe’s current status citing HR matters, it did announce Susan Green as the acting Superintendent of Prisons, replacing the former provincial manager of institutional programs. Engaging the Office of the Comptroller General in the review process, the department eagerly anticipates the findings of the assessment. Furthermore, the department has notified the Office of the Auditor General about the situation. Although the possibility of an official investigation by the auditor general remains undecided, the office was informed by the department on Monday regarding potential fraudulent activities.

Chafe has not responded to CBC News’ request for comment through his government email at this time.
