“Emotional Challenge of Downsizing for Aging Canadians”

Published on

Susan Masi faced the challenge of downsizing when she sold her townhouse in Surrey, B.C., to move in with her family. Reluctantly, she had to part with cherished items like her mother’s China cabinet and a 126-year-old mahogany dining table passed down from her great-grandmother. Letting go of these belongings, each with its own story and sentimental value, was a significant emotional hurdle for the 79-year-old widow.

As Canada’s population ages, more individuals may find themselves in a similar situation. According to a recent report by Statistics Canada, by 2030, approximately one in four Canadians will be 65 or older. A survey conducted by RE/MAX indicated that 16% of Canadian respondents aged 65 or older plan to downsize their homes within the next decade.

June Cotte, a marketing professor at Western University, emphasized that giving up cherished possessions can feel like relinquishing a part of one’s identity. Many individuals struggle to find suitable recipients for their belongings, leading them to delay decisions until it becomes too late.

To navigate this process, some individuals seek assistance from professionals like Christine Valk, the founder of Estate Sales by Christine Caroline in Vancouver. These experts help individuals determine the value of their items, decide what to auction, discard, recycle, or donate, and facilitate the transition to a smaller living space.

Christopher Reid, CEO of MaxSold, an online auction platform in Waterloo, Ont., noted that vintage items, despite changing trends, still attract buyers interested in historical pieces. While parting with possessions can be challenging, it also offers an opportunity to reflect on memories and experiences accumulated over a lifetime.

Despite the emotional strain of downsizing, Susan Masi finds solace in reminiscing about the 56 years’ worth of memories associated with her possessions, including family gatherings and dinners. Each item tells a story and holds a special place in her heart, making the process of letting go both poignant and enlightening.
