In a solemn Calgary courtroom, a prosecutor recounted disturbing text messages exchanged between two men who conspired to lure, restrain, and sexually assault women for profit by filming their heinous acts. Steven Zwick meticulously planned the abduction of his ex-girlfriend, Chelsea Davidenas, in February 2024, aiming to exploit her vulnerability for financial gain.
Tragically, Davidenas valiantly fought against her captors but ultimately lost her life in the struggle. Zwick, initially facing a first-degree murder charge, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a life sentence with a minimum of 15 years before parole eligibility. Another individual, referred to as PR, faces similar charges pending a jury trial in January.
The prosecution detailed how Zwick and PR, with a significant age gap between them, schemed to abduct and sexually assault women, initially targeting a woman named Ashley. When their plan with Ashley faltered, they turned their attention to Davidenas, orchestrating her abduction and eventual tragic demise.
Following Davidenas’ death, the perpetrators callously left her body in PR’s residence while planning a subsequent assault on Ashley. However, their sinister intentions were thwarted when Ashley managed to escape their clutches after a harrowing ordeal involving drugging and attempted strangulation.
Law enforcement became involved when a friend of Ashley, aware of the connection between Davidenas and Zwick, alerted the authorities. Subsequently, an undercover operation led to Zwick’s confession of his nefarious plot, culminating in his arrest and the discovery of Davidenas’ remains.
During Zwick’s sentencing, the court heard poignant victim impact statements from Davidenas’ family, underscoring the profound loss and devastation caused by the heinous crimes. The presiding judge condemned the perpetrators’ actions as “reprehensible” and highlighted the unimaginable cruelty inflicted upon Davidenas, emphasizing the need for justice in the face of such atrocities.
