Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the Montreal Elite beach volleyball pro tour event by defeating Brazil’s Thamela Coradello and Victoria Lopes with a score of 21-13, 21-18. The duo, who won Olympic silver in Tokyo, remain undefeated at 3-0 and currently lead in Pool A.
“We were well-prepared with our game plan and had good communication on the court,” said Wilkerson. “Our focus was on our defense and side out plays, and our determination to battle through every match.”
On the other hand, Lea Monkhouse from Mississauga and Marie-Alex Belanger from Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez suffered two losses, bringing their record to 0-3 in the tournament.
In the men’s competition, Sam Schachter from Richmond Hill and Jonny Pickett from Wiarton fell short against Brazil’s Andre Loyola Stein and Renato Lima with a score of 21-13, 23-21. Despite the loss, the Canadian duo advanced to the playoffs with a 1-2 record.
Meanwhile, Steve Abrams from Georgetown and Cameron Chadwick from Barrie faced defeat against Americans Taylor Crabb and Andy Benesh in a close match ending 21-23, 21-18, 15-12. Abrams and Chadwick are currently at 0-3 in the competition.
The tournament is ongoing until Sunday at Parc Jean-Drapeau.
