“Owner of Ambassador Bridge Seeks Meeting with Canadian Officials Amid Competing Crossing Opening”

Published on

The owner of the Ambassador Bridge in the United States, Matthew Moroun, requested a meeting with senior Canadian government officials regarding the new Gordie Howe International Bridge approximately three and a half months before the opening of the competing crossing. Details of the discussions during the April 7 meeting remain mostly undisclosed, as revealed in federal briefing notes acquired through the Access to Information Act.

Moroun, based in Michigan, was joined by Kevin Kalczynski, a senior lawyer from the family’s companies, and Brennan Lee, a senior financial executive and Moroun’s son-in-law. On the Canadian side, attendees included Housing Infrastructure and Communities Canada deputy minister Paul Halucha, assistant deputy minister Marco Presutti, and Jesse Tracey, a senior federal government lawyer.

While the meeting was initiated by Moroun, significant portions of the agenda and the government’s report on the meeting were redacted. The purpose of Moroun’s request and the specifics discussed were not disclosed by the Ambassador Bridge when contacted by CBC News.

The Ambassador Bridge, a crucial trade link between the U.S. and Canada, faced the potential loss of almost half its traffic to the new Gordie Howe bridge, according to U.S. government estimates. In 2021, the Ambassador Bridge handled over $140 billion in merchandise trade, accounting for approximately 26% of Canada’s exports by road.

The Gordie Howe bridge, with an estimated cost of $6.4 billion, faced pressure from the White House to expedite its opening. Canada aimed to navigate these challenges through discussions with private bridge owners like Moroun, emphasizing the need to enhance the trade corridor’s efficiency and economic impact.

Following the meeting, a federal briefing note dated April 24 mentioned that Moroun acknowledged the impending opening of the Gordie Howe bridge. Subsequently, the Ambassador Bridge adjusted toll rates for certain users, positioning them slightly lower than those planned for the Gordie Howe bridge.

The transition from a monopoly to a competitive environment posed challenges for the Ambassador Bridge, prompting strategic adjustments to maintain its market position. The Moroun family’s efforts, including legal challenges and political lobbying, underscore their commitment to safeguarding their business interests amidst the evolving competitive landscape.

The alignment of the Morouns’ objectives with political support, particularly during the Trump administration, highlighted a convergence of interests based on mutual preferences for private enterprise. Despite potential disruptions to cross-border trade, the family’s stance reflected a strategic alliance with the “America First” agenda, emphasizing national interests in trade policies.
