Webster, the great white shark’s appearance off Newfoundland and Labrador signals a recovering ocean, as reported by a research organization monitoring these predators in the Atlantic. Ocearch, a global non-profit supporting shark research, has observed several great white sharks in the region in recent years, according to Ocearch founder Chris Fischer. Webster, a 12-foot shark weighing over 1,000 pounds, has spent the summer swimming near the northern peninsula of Newfoundland, predominantly around Cow Head beaches. Fischer noted that these white sharks have been consistently returning to specific locations and seal haul-outs each season, indicating a pattern of food availability.

The presence of great white sharks in the area may evoke fear in some, but Fischer views it as a positive development. He highlighted the significant decline in the global great white shark population from the 1970s to the 1990s, with only about nine percent remaining before conservation efforts were implemented. Fischer emphasized that having sharks in the vicinity benefits local fisheries as sharks naturally regulate seal populations, thereby safeguarding fish stocks.

Marine biologist Caroline Miri from Fisheries and Oceans Canada underscored the crucial role sharks play in maintaining marine ecosystems’ health and stability by controlling invasive species and balancing lower-tier fish populations. Ocearch has tagged approximately 115 sharks across the Atlantic, from Florida to Newfoundland and Labrador. Webster, initially tagged in Nova Scotia in September 2025, was last detected off Cow Head on August 7.

Fischer reassured that encountering sharks like Webster should not be a cause for alarm, as long as safety precautions are observed. He encouraged people to enjoy the water responsibly.
